Meet the Presenters

Selina Jaques-King

Selina Jacques-King is a part-time PhD student at the University of Wolverhampton, researching the lived experiences of British Sign Language Interpreters of Colour in the UK. She graduated in 2012 with a BA Hons in BSL/English Interpreting and a Foundation degree. In 2018, Selina returned to the University to join the first cohort of the Interpreting MA.

A practising freelance Registered Sign Language Interpreter, Selina is based in the West Midlands, UK. She also serves as a visiting lecturer at the University of Wolverhampton, where she contributes to the development of future interpreters.

This session examines the blurred boundary between professional identity and racial/ethnic identity, exploring how BSL interpreters of colour navigate the complexities of being a minority within a minority. It also challenges the profession to reflect the diverse communities it serves, questioning how intersectional experiences shape professional and personal lives.
