Meet the Presenters

Rebecca Cramp

Rebecca Cramp is an experienced Auslan-English interpreter with 24 years of practice. Recently, she graduated with a Master of Research from Macquarie University and holds a Master of Translating and Interpreting Studies. Rebecca's career spans community and conference interpreting, with a particular focus on working with the Deaf Muslim community in religious settings since 2007. Her research interests include interpreting practice, cultural and linguistic competence in religious contexts, and lexical development in specialised domains.  Rebecca was awarded the prestigious CIUTI Prize for her exceptional Master's research, which underpins her presentation topic. This international award recognises excellence in MA theses at CIUTI-accredited institutions.

This session navigates the blurred boundary between linguistic and cultural representation in tri-lingual interpreting. It explores how interpreters balance the demands of fidelity to multiple source languages, the cultural nuances of Islamic teachings, and the accessibility needs of their audience, highlighting the complexity of interpreting in diverse, multimodal religious contexts.
