Meet the Presenters

Dr Christopher Stone and Nicolas Hanquet

Christopher Stone, based in Wolverhampton, is a prominent interpreter, researcher and academic in the field of sign language interpreting. With a strong background in Deaf Studies and interpreting research, he has contributed significantly to advancing knowledge about interpreting practices, ethics, and the intersection of deaf and hearing interpreter roles.

Nicolas Hanquet, from UCLouvain Saint-Louis Brussels, is an interpreter, an academic and a researcher specialising in sign language interpretation. His work focuses on interpreting education, interpreter practices, and fostering collaboration between deaf and hearing interpreters.

This session examines the blurred boundary between interpreters’ professional roles and personal identities as they adapted to public scrutiny during a global crisis. It explores how heightened visibility reshaped their relationship with the communities they serve and the interpreting profession as a whole.
