Dr Paul Michaels
Dr Paul Michaels is a UK-based registered sign language interpreter, professional supervisor and researcher. He has been a qualified interpreter since 2011 and completed a Diploma in Supervision in 2018. He subsequently qualified as an assessor of trainee interpreters in 2022 and also undertakes teaching responsibilities.
Paul completed his PhD at Durham University in 2023, examining the motivations of men entering the UK sign language interpreting profession and their experiences as practitioners. His wider research interests include the professional development and progression of sign language interpreters and issues affecting the Deaf LGBT+ community.
Alongside his interpreting, supervision and academic work, Paul is an active member of the Association of Sign Language Interpreters (ASLI) and Visual Language Professionals (VLP). He is also an individual member of the European Forum of Sign Language Interpreters (efsli) and the World Association of Sign Language Interpreters (WASLI).
