Brett Best

Brett is a fully qualified American Sign Language (ASL)/British Sign Language (BSL)/English interpreter, interpreter trainer, and researcher based in the U.K. With extensive experience in international contexts, she specialises in conference interpreting, politics, and higher education, and has significant expertise in community and video remote interpreting. In addition to delivering workshops and conference presentations, Brett has served on the Board of Directors for the Association of Sign Language Interpreters (ASLI) of the United Kingdom.

She holds the National Interpreter Certification (NIC) in ASL/English interpretation through the United States Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and has several years of interpreting experience. Additionally, she is also a qualified British Sign Language (BSL)/English Registered Sign Language Interpreter (RSLI), based in the Reading area, providing both remote and in-person services abroad.

This session addresses the blurred boundary between cultural integration and professional neutrality, exploring how interpreters can navigate dual identities and balance the needs of diverse cultural and linguistic contexts while living and working abroad.
